CHAMPOLLION PALACE / PIGEONS (video 14'27'' / Cairo, December 2012)

The video shows the large, affluently decorated entrance hall of the former palace including a gallantly wound double-flight staircase that leads to the upper floor. The signs of decay are underlined by the dust that has accumulated over the years. A long red carpet in the center of the hall leads to the staircase.
A woman and a man, both dressed completely white, descend from the top of each staircase. Both carry a palm wood cage holding eight white pigeons each. Their walking pattern illustrates the number eight until they directly face each other across the hall, with the red carpet placed in between them. Next, the pigeons are taken out of their cages and thrown into the air, hence releasing them into the overt hall. Subsequently, an extended setting demonstrating the flight and movements of the pigeons in the dusty hall, while the couple continues to inertly face each other. At one point, both stand up and return back upstairs, following the same route they had entered the hall down each staircase.

Das Video zeigt die große, reich dekorierte Eingangshalle des einstigen Prinzenpalastes und eine zweiläufige, edel gewundene Treppe ins Obergeschoss. Überall viel Staub und Spuren des Verfalls. Mittig durch die Halle führt ein langer roter Teppich bis zur Treppe.
Von beiden Treppenabgängen steigen von oben eine Frau und ein Mann in weiß gekleidet herab. Beide tragen einen Palmenholzkäfig mit je acht weißen Tauben. Ihr Gang beschreibt eine Acht bis sie sich in der Halle gegenübersetzen. Zwischen ihnen der rote Teppich. Langsam entnehmen sie ihren Käfigen die Tauben, werfen sie in die Luft und entlassen sie in die offene Halle. Es folgt eine lange Einstellung mit den Flügen und Bewegungen der Tauben in der staubigen Halle, während das Paar sich reglos gegenübersitzt. Irgendwann stehen sie auf und gehen den gleichen Weg zurück über die Treppe nach oben.

CHAMPOLLION PALACE / PIGEONS (photos / Cairo, December 2012)

These photos were captured in numerous different rooms in the ruinous palace preceding the video. One can sense the palace’s original splendor with the course of time. Black boards, posters and drawings in several rooms exemplify their previous academic use. A photo was taken in each room of the building. A man and a woman dressed in white each standing and sitting, respectively, carry a wooden cage with eight pigeons individually. Placed next to the couple are incense and tea.

Die Photos sind vor dem Video in den vielen verschiedenen Räumen des ruinösen Palastes aufgenommen. Man ahnt die urprüngliche Pracht und sieht den Lauf der Geschichte. Tafeln, Plakate, Zeichnungen in vielen Zimmern künden von der früheren Schulnutzung. In jedem Raum entstand ein Foto. Mann und Frau, in weiß gekleidet mit je einem Holzkäfig mit acht Tauben. Sie sitzt, er steht. Vor und neben ihr Rauchwerk und Tee.

The exterior view of the front of the large two-storied and formerly especially noble palace is portrayed. In the upper floor five exalted doors lead to different balconies. A man and a woman dressed in white step out of every single door to the respective balustrade and drop a white feather. Every feather floats through the air in a different fashion until it lands in a random place.

Die Aussenansicht der Frontseite des zweistöckigen, großen und ehemals sehr edlen Palastes.
Im Obergeschoss führen fünf hohe Türen auf Balkone. Aus immer verschiedenen Türen kommen eine Frau und ein Mann in weiß bis zur jeweiligen Balustrade und lassen eine weiße Feder fallen. Die Federn schweben, jede anders, durch die Luft bis sie irgendwo landen.
